On November 18th -- just 10 days after the 2016 election -- 29 Hour Music People set ourselves up for our scheduled marathon weekend of impromptu writing and recording. We intended to make our fifth album, and had booked Cathedral Hall, a giant and magically echoey, decommissioned church in Jersey City. We loaded all of our instruments and recording equipment into the sanctuary with excitement about the project that faced us, but with a sense of confusion, anger and fear about what was coming next for our country and the world — not even sure whether what we thought was happening was even real.

As always, we needed a theme and title for our album. We settled on "Denial," and in the following two allotted days we composed and recorded an album that explored the wide range of possible meanings of the word, from abstract, intellectual notions to concretely raw sentiments — matching the emotional, and defiant way we were feeling.

Although the complete album is not ready for release, we wanted to share the song "Fake News.” It's a sweet blast of anger with a churning, ominous undercurrent. The term was fairly new at the time. And we want you to remember that it was first used to describe right-wing news sites, often created or promoted by bots, to spread misinformation. Notice how the meaning has changed, like so many things, through repeated use from one particularly notable complainer.

Nobody is sure that the healthcare battle is over, and Sweet Relief Musicians Fund is still paying the medical bills of working musicians. If you like the tune, please buy it (or any of our other works). All proceeds go to that organization.
